Brief Biography:
Jacob R. Lofgren joined Collins, Liu & Associates in the summer of 2009. Jacob primarily practices in the following areas of law: criminal appeals and criminal postconviction; criminal trials; civil restraining orders; and, domestic relations / family law. In his time with the firm, Jacob has successful handled jury trials on a wide-variety of cases from basic misdemeanors to serious felonies. Jacob also handles the firm’s appellate matters across the State of Colorado, including appeals from county court to district court, appeals to the Colorado Court of Appeals, and appeals to the Colorado Supreme Court. Notably, Jacob is currently handling a significant matter of first impression before the Colorado Supreme Court.
Outside of the office, Jacob is an active member of the community. Jacob was elected to the Board of Trustees for the Town of Lochbuie, Colorado in April 2012. Additionally, Jacob was elected to the Board of Directors for the Weld County Bar Association in May 2012. Beyond that, Jacob also volunteers his time to the Union Colony High School mock trial team serving as an attorney-coach, and volunteering time to Weld County Legal Services by providing legal advice to low-income citizens on a bi-monthly basis at Our Lady of Peace Church in Greeley, Colorado.
Prior to joining Collins, Liu & Associates, Jacob served as the judicial law clerk to the Honorable Daryl Hecht, Associate Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. As a clerk, Jacob’s work focused heavily on research and writing related to the unique and complex issues presented to the Iowa Supreme Court in a variety of legal arenas from divorces to criminal matters, worker’s compensation to complex civil suits. As a result, Jacob developed a unique ability to find creative solutions to complex legal matters, which he carries into his representation of his client’s today.
Jacob was a lifelong resident of the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin) prior to relocating to Colorado with his family in 2009. Jacob received his Juris Doctor with high honors from Drake University Law School in May 2008. As a law student, Jacob captained the National Moot Court Team, participated in mock trial, and received numerous awards recognizing his advocacy skills. Additionally, Jacob served as a notes editor on the Drake Journal of Agricultural Law and his journal note, “I Miss Mayberry”: Revitalizing America’s Rural Downtowns, was published in the summer of 2008.
Before law school, Jacob graduated summa cum laude from Saint Joseph’s College – Indiana in May 2005. Jacob completed two Bachelor of Arts degress: political science and economics, as well as a minor in history. While at Saint Joseph’s, Jacob captained the mock trial team, served as a representative in the student government, and worked as an “ambassador” in the college’s admissions office.
